Alice Walker is an internationally celebrated author, poet and activist. She has written 7 novels, 4 collections of short stories, 4 children's books and volumes of essays and poems. She is most famous for her novel The Color Purple, which she won the Pulitzer Prize in 1983 and was the first African American woman to win this prize. Her works have been translated into more than 2 dozen languages and her books have sold more that 15 million copies. Aside from the Pulitzer Prize, she has received the National Book Award, an inductee to the California Hall of Fame.
Walker has been an activist all her adult life. She believes that learning to extend the range of our compassion is available to everyone. She is not only a defender of human rights but of the rights of all living beings. She is one of the world's most prolific writers and continues to travel the world to literally stand on the side of the poor, the economically, spiritually and politically oppressed. She also stands on the side of the revolutionaries, teachers and leaders who seek to change and transform the world.
