Celie: She is the protagonist and the narrator of the story. She is a poor, uneducated black woman who was abused her whole life. As an adult, Celie befriends a blues singer Shug Avery, who helps Celie find her voice to speak up. In the end of the novel Celie is happy, independent and self confident.
Nettie: Celie's younger sister. She runs away from the abusive household. She meets a missionary couple and goes to Africa to preach. She becomes the care taker of the couple and their children and writer letter to Celie but Celie never receives them.
Mr. : Celie's husband who abuses her for years. Has an affair with Shug. Hides the letters that Nettie wrote to Celie. After Celie finally stands up against Mr. He goes through a deep personal transformation .
Shug Avery: Blues singer who is Mr.'s mistress. Becomes a mentor and Celie's friend. Motivated Celie to stand up against Mr. and to become independent.
Sofia : A large, fiercely independent woman who becomes friends with Celie. She refuses to submit to white people, men or anyone who tries to dominate her, which puts her into a lot of hardships but she over comes them.
