Celie's new husband Mr. marries her so she can take care of his 4 children and work around the house. Celie is somewhat happy to be with mr because she can get her and her sister Nettie out of the abusive household of their father. But in Mr household he tries to get Nettie to be sexually attracted to him but Nettie refuses, which makes Mr kick her out. Nettie tells Celie that she will write to her but Ceile never hears from her. Celie's life falls apart because she is separated from the only person she loves and who loves her back. Ceile's life changes when Mr brings home his mistress who is very ill. Shug is everything that Celie isn't: beautiful, independent and outspoken. Celie falls in love with Shug. Shug encourages Celie to stnad up against Mr. They both find that Mr had been hiding all of Nettie's letters. They read that nettie has been preaching in Africa with the missionary couple that had taken care of Celie's children. Celie and Shug fall in love a leave to Tennessee. Celie's father dies so she goes back home. She finds out that the house she grew up in was hers now. She decides to stay there and wait for Netties return. Although Shug and Celie aren't together anymore they remained good friends. Mr had changed into a more decent man when Celie had left him. Nettie comes back with her husband Samuel and Celie's children.
